Man is attacked by military police with batons and kicks in São Carlos, SP

A man was surrounded and attacked by military police officers with kicks and batons, last Wednesday (23), in the Vila Prado neighborhood, in São Carlos (SP). Officers were called to the scene to respond to a fight in which the victim was involved.

Surveillance cameras recorded the police attacking the man, who was lying on the ground. Shortly afterwards, his mother appears, inside the garage, and talks to the agents. (Watch the video above).

In a statement, the State Department of Public Security (SSP-SP) said that the Military Police analyzes the images to adopt the appropriate measures. The institution reinforces that it does not condone excesses and misconduct, strictly punishing identified cases.

"That was torture for me, right? It was very difficult for me to see it here. I think they have to do their job [...]. I'm not defending my son, it's wrong, it's wrong, but I think they don't have the right to do what they did," said the man's mother.

In the images you can see her trying to help her son, but she couldn't. Another video, from outside the house, shows the man standing on the sidewalk gesturing to the police. He puts his hands on his face as if crying and sits down.

He is then handcuffed by the police. This video was recorded by the victim's mother and shows how the man was handcuffed on the ground after being beaten by the police.

"I've never seen this. I never, and I don't want to ever again, right? God willing, never again, but I shouldn't have seen it, I should have respected myself. And why keep beating me at my gate?", said the man's mother.

In a report from EPTV, a TV Globo affiliate, the man's mother said that the police returned to her house hours after the incident. "I think two, three times. Talking, wanting to see the images, saying that it's harming them."

The next day, after waking up, the man was taken to the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) in Vila Prado. He was treated at the unit and underwent a medical examination, which found that the injuries presented were compatible with beatings.

"The scene was very sad. They had to do their job, right? Catch him, take him, you know, to the police station. [...] And they simply took him to the woods to beat him more and leave him there", concluded the mother.
