A 51-year-old man was reported to the police on suspicion of committing rape against his own 12-year-old granddaughter in Fortaleza. The victim's mother heard the report and filed a police report against her own father. She claims that, as a child, she also suffered abuse at home.
The report of the crime of rape of a vulnerable person, which occurred in the Parque Presidente Vargas neighborhood, is investigated by the Police Station to Combat the Exploitation of Children and Adolescents (Dececa). The police investigation was opened this Friday (25).
In a statement, the suspect's defense stated that they are monitoring the situation and that he is available to the authorities to provide clarification (see below). The report does not disclose the name of the mother and grandfather to protect the child's identity.
Victim's report
To g1, the woman said that she discovered the situation when her 12-year-old daughter decided to tell her that she had already been raped by her grandfather. The report was made by the teenager, who arrived home from school shaken after hearing comments about sexual abuse.
The girl told her mother that she noticed, when she was 8 years old, that her grandfather looked at her differently and that, initially, he rubbed her private parts. And she reported that, after a while, she started to be raped by him.
The teenager also said that the last rape was committed about 2 months ago, when the man also ignored her complaints as he felt pain during the abuse.
“I was very nervous and believed it immediately, precisely because of the things that had already happened to me because, when I was a child, he had also abused me… But, as I was a very young child, I didn't even understand what had happened to me”, said the mother.
The mother took the teenager to the police station, where the complaint was formalized with a police report. The girl then underwent examinations and procedures to prevent Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).
Despite reporting having suffered abuse as a child, the teenager's mother says that she had never reported her father and had decided to forget what she had been through. She detailed that, in her adult life, she began to trust the dedication that her father showed in accompanying his granddaughters since birth.
"I keep taking responsibility all the time, blaming myself, feeling like the worst mother. Because I let this happen to her. In my head, I could have stopped it. And, unfortunately, I couldn't, but I'll go as far as I have to go now so that justice can be done for her", said the mother.
After making the complaint, she stated that her daughter must undergo psychological counseling. “She tells me that she just wants this to end soon, that she wants to go back to living her life normally”, he explained.
No contact in recent months
The suspect's contact with the teenager was frequent. She and her younger sister spent weekends at his house. According to the mother, some episodes caused her to stop sending her daughters to stay with their grandfather. One of them was the eldest daughter's request not to go there anymore.
"She didn't really want to go to his house. And that even surprised me because she was always very excited to go to his house because of the trips, the toys, the gifts, what he did for them", says the mother.
According to her, the teenager said that the abuse happened when he was at home without his wife. The suspect's current partner is not the children's grandmother.
About 2 months ago, the girls' mother received messages from his wife stating that she had found child pornography content on his cell phone. According to his mother, his partner also said she had seen him talking to children and teenagers.
Based on this information, she declares that she was very scared and that she preferred to interrupt her daughters' contact with him. Since then, she hasn't let him see his granddaughters.
What the defense says
In a statement, lawyer Victor Fernandes Tavares informed that the suspect's defense “is aware of the accusation mentioned in the report and follows the situation with the seriousness it demands”.
The defense also mentioned that, to date, it has not been informed of the initiation of formal proceedings and that the suspect is available to the competent authorities to provide clarifications, if called.
"Out of respect for the sensitivity of the situation and the people involved, the defense will not publicly comment on the details of the accusation. It reiterates the importance of a responsible investigation, in compliance with due legal process and the presumption of innocence", concludes the note.
