İletişim Publications changed the cover of Tanıl Bora's book 'Revolutionaries: 78's'

It was revealed that İletişim Publications decided to change the controversial cover of the book Devrimciler: '78'liler: A Generation Biography, which was prepared to be published by Tanıl Bora.

Researcher-historian Rıfat Bali announced the cover change in his post on his social media account. Bali also shared the e-mail sent by the company that will distribute the book, informing that the cover will be changed.

Bali wrote:

"The reaction that arose due to the manipulation of the cover of Tanıl Bora's book 78'ler, which will be distributed soon by İletişim Publications, led to the change of the cover... This was what had to be done... The e-mail from the distribution company is as follows:

'There will be changes in the cover of the book Revolutionaries - 78's A Generation Biography - Tanıl Bora, whose imprint we have shared below, which is planned to be released on September 18, 2026 by İletişim Publications. For this reason, we kindly request you to remove the cover image of the book in your systems now.'"

THE INTERVENTION IN THE PHOTO DRAW A REACTION

The original photograph used on the cover of the book was taken at the May 1 Rally held in Giresun in 1979. In the photo, there were activists carrying a banner signed "Revolutionary Way" and a photo of Mahir Çayan.

In the version used on the cover of the book, it was seen that the photo was digitally manipulated and the phrase "Revolutionary Struggle..." was placed instead of the phrase "Revolutionary Path" on the banner. This change drew reaction on social media.

'PERMISSION' STATEMENT FROM THE PUBLISHING HOUSE

In its statement to Cumhuriyet, İletişim Yayınları confirmed that the photo was intervened and stated that the image was taken from the Ziya Gül-Erdem Gül archive.

The publishing house announced that the image was "adapted to the scope of the book with the permission of the author." It was stated that this usage was preferred because the book covers the 1978 generation by taking into account different organizations.
