Canada seeks unique alliance with EU, rejects membership

Canada is seeking a “unique alliance” with the European Union, but does not want to become a member of the confederation. Prime Minister Mark Carney said this, responding to a report in the Wall Street Journal newspaper. Accordingly, he is examining whether Canada can become an “associated member” of the EU. “We don’t want to become a member of the European Union,” Carney said. “What we are seeking – and what we will begin discussions about – is a unique alliance between Canada and the European Union.” Both sides shared the same ‌values ​​and priorities and had ‌complementary strengths.

The background to the rapprochement with Europe is Canada's escalating trade dispute with the USA. Relations between Ottawa and Washington have deteriorated significantly since US President Donald Trump took office last year. Trump renewed his criticism on Sunday, calling Canada “the most difficult negotiating partner.” However, he believes the country is “eager to reach an agreement.” The US president reiterated his intention to impose new tariffs on cars, trucks ⁠and auto parts from ‌Canada starting January 1st.

According to the Wall Street Journal report, Canada and the EU are discussing how to enable the free movement of goods, services and labor in strategic supply chains such as energy, AI, defense and critical raw materials.
