Teacher shot dead at school in southeast Turkey

A teacher was shot dead in an attack at a school in Osmaniye, southeastern Turkey. The state news agency Anadolu and local media reported that the teacher was shot by her nephew on the school grounds after a private argument. The teacher subsequently died from his injuries. The governor of Osmaniye province said at the scene that the suspect had been arrested and an unregistered pistol had been seized.

Circumstances should be clarified

The crime took place in the schoolyard of the Farabi Anadolu High School, where the Turkish language and literature teacher was employed. Governor Mehmet Fatih Serdengecti said, according to Anadolu, that the suspected shooter had been in an argument with his uncle and that there were signs of schizophrenia. After the crime, rescue workers and the gendarmerie were called to the school. The teacher, who was seriously injured by gunfire, could not be saved in the hospital. Serdengecti announced that the public prosecutor's office would clarify the circumstances that led to the crime. He emphasized that this was not an attack on students or the education system.

Security precautions at schools tightened

There had already been an attack at a school in Turkey in April, when a 14-year-old opened fire and killed nine of his classmates and a teacher. The shooter also died in the attack. The parents currently have to answer in court. The government responded at the beginning of the school year by tightening security precautions.
