The Left accuses the CDU of failing to differentiate itself from the AfD

Left-wing leading candidate Elif Eralp has accused the CDU of not distinguishing itself clearly enough from AfD positions. “You don’t defeat the AfD by taking on their demands,” she said at the last meeting before the election to the House of Representatives on September 20th.

That's exactly what the CDU did in the federal government, for example by suspending family reunification for people from Syria and rejecting refugees at German borders. «What was the point of all this? It strengthened the AfD,” said Eralp. “And has the CDU top candidate in Berlin distanced himself from it?” she asked in the direction of Stefan Evers, who wants to become the new governing mayor for the CDU.

The Left accuses the CDU of dividing the city

Instead, the CDU is helping to divide the city. Eralp pointed out a party poster with the slogan “reading, writing, calculating instead of gendering”. “So you want to bring our city together, Mr. Evers?”

Eralp asked where the AfD ban proposal was that the Berlin CDU and the government coalition had promised to introduce in the Federal Council. “And what about the promised democracy promotion law that the SPD social senator introduced, but which you as the CDU are blocking?”

In the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt last Sunday, the AfD was by far the strongest party. In the polls for the House of Representatives election in Berlin, the party is in the top places together with the CDU and the Left.
