Meloni asks for EU flexibility to support families and businesses against energy inflation

We have already raised in Ecofin the need to take into account the higher inflation recorded in this period in the calculation of the European parameters to be respected and the allowed deficit. Other Member States are going in the same direction. And I intend to take action again towards the EU Commission. I am writing to President von der Leyen to ask that the issue be dealt with at the Ecofin meeting next week and then at the next EU Council in two weeks: we believe that in the face of inflationary growth due to high energy costs at a global level it is necessary to recognize Member States with additional flexibility to support families and businesses". This was said by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in a video link to the second edition of "Oltre le Radici", the annual event of the newspaper Il Gazzettino.

"We are at the beginning of the work that will lead us to define the measures that will make up the budget law, notoriously it is not an easy job and it is not even a quick job. What I can give for sure is that we will continue in the direction we have taken up until now because we have always followed the same logic in recent years, adding one more piece to the same strategy year after year", added the Prime Minister, underlining that "that strategy has always focused on wages and the defense of purchasing power, support for businesses, protection of the family and incentives for birth rates and health".

"In my future currently there is always the same thing, that is, trying to do the best for my nation, honoring the mandate that the Italians gave me until the Italians trust me and us. The rest of Giorgia Meloni's future depends on the Italians and not on Giorgia Meloni", added the Prime Minister.
