Stating that it is not right to attribute the cool and rainy weather directly to the El Nino effect, Tek said, "As we move towards November in the last period of October, it seems that there will be those hot days that we call 'bacon summer'."
Meteorological engineer Prof. Dr. Adil Tek talked about the heavy showers in Istanbul and the weather changes expected thereafter. Stating that hot weather can be seen in October and November, Tek also stated that the cooling of the weather in Istanbul and throughout the country should not be directly attributed to the 'Scandinavian high pressure' known as El Nino.
'COOL WEATHER WILL LAST FOR 2 WEEKS'
Prof. Dr. Tek said, "The rainy weather has been continuing its effect since the previous Sunday, especially in the west of the country, then in the central and eastern parts of the country. Along with this, the wind continues to blow as a storm, especially in the Marmara, and first of all, the wind will continue this way until the end of the week, even if it weakens from time to time. There is a wind blowing from the north-eastern direction, and with it the rainy weather manifests itself. The rain continues today in the Marmara and mainly in the Black Sea during the day. Again, in the Mediterranean and the Mediterranean. In the eastern parts, Southeastern Anatolia, Eastern Anatolia, and the northern and eastern parts of Central Anatolia are among the places that receive rain. There is also a blockage created by the structure we call the Scandinavian high pressure. This blockade will continue for about 2 weeks. The values continue below the seasonal norms, but the rains will continue until the end of the week. "Although it has decreased a little more during the week, we will be seeing rain coming from the Central Mediterranean again after the cool air leaving the country via the Black Sea. The temperatures in the long term, that is, in the 2-week period, seem to be below the seasonal norms and the rains will come along with it," he said.
'BACONY SUMMER WILL BE IN THE LAST PERIOD OF OCTOBER AND THE EARLY PERIOD OF NOVEMBER'
Prof. Dr. Tek said, "When we look at Istanbul in general, there are intermittent rains in Istanbul today. This rainy system will continue in Istanbul tomorrow, but some more rains are not as strong as the very heavy rains in the morning hours on Sunday and Monday. The intensity of the rains is a little less, but especially in the Western Black Sea region, the rains get a little stronger during the day. There are also risks of floods and floods due to the rains there. At the same time, as we said before, the strong wind blowing from the Poyraz will continue into the weekend." "In fact, there is cool and cold weather throughout the country in the last week of September and the first week of October. Temperatures have dropped to values below seasonal norms. In the second period of October, temperatures will be slightly more normal, especially in the western regions. As we move towards November, those hot days that we call the summer of October seem to be in the last period of October and the beginning of November," he said.
'IT IS NOT CORRECT TO ASSOCIATE OUR COOL WEATHER WITH EL NINO'
Tek said, "El Nino is a situation that occurs when sea water temperatures in the Pacific Ocean rise above the average. Currently, one of the highest periods of El Nino is experienced and sea water temperatures continue to rise. These values in the Pacific have increased by approximately 4-5 degrees above the average. This actually means an increase in sea water temperature at levels that have not been seen before. This situation is also called 'Mega El Nino' because El Nino has reached its highest levels. El Nino is over our country." We cannot say that it has a direct effect, but we can say that El Nino is a structure that affects the atmospheric system around the world. It is not right to associate this cool weather with El Nino. The cool weather affecting us right now is a structure we call 'Scandinavian high pressure'. Due to the high pressure on Scandinavia, cool air comes to our country from the east. This structure seems to remain in that region for about a week. "Due to the blockage, the weather does not exceed seasonal norms. After this system meets with the warm water of the Black Sea, Aegean and Mediterranean, rainfall continues to be more effective." he said.
'WE WILL SEE THE INCREASE IN DAM FULLNESS IN OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER'
Tek said, "This week is a rainy week. We will see precipitation in the form of rain, especially in the Marmara, Black Sea, northern Central Anatolia and northern parts of Eastern Anatolia, and towards the end of the week, in the parts towards Eastern Anatolia. Yes, the temperatures have dropped, but of course these temperatures are not snow cold. These are not temperatures that will cause snowfall; however, there may be a possibility of snowfall in places where the altitude is above 2500 - 3000 meters and the temperatures drop. These are also in the East There is a possibility of snow in the higher parts of the Black Sea and in the higher parts of Eastern Anatolia. There is no snowfall at the moment, but the occupancy rates in Istanbul dams are currently at 36 percent and have dropped considerably. With these precipitations, these levels will not suddenly rise to 40 percent or 50 percent. The increase in dam occupancy will increase by one point, especially in the rains in October and November.
