Decision in Drug Case in Egypt: Death Penalty to 12 Defendants

The verdict has been finalized in the case regarding drug crimes that took place in Egypt last month. The death sentence for 12 defendants, including television presenter Sarah Khalifa, known for her television program "Mission Impossible", which deals with crime issues, was finalized after the opinion of the Grand Mufti of Egypt was obtained.

The court report stated that the defendants were convicted of drug trafficking and rape, and that these crimes "do not fall within the scope of 'deliberate murder', for which the death penalty should be limited in accordance with international law and standards."

In the case, 9 defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment, while 7 defendants were acquitted.

GANG CONNECTIONS WERE DETECTED

The state-owned Al Ahram newspaper reported that the defendants were members of a criminal gang that smuggled raw materials used in drug production into the country for the purpose of selling them, and that they were in possession of illegal firearms and ammunition. It was reported to the court that more than 750 kilograms of drugs and raw materials brought to the country to be used in drug production were seized.

According to the news of Al Ahram; While 20 witnesses testified to the prosecutor's office, electronic evidence, including conversations and video footage, was also submitted to the file.
