Mourinho regrets Real Madrid's defeat against Betis despite the team's dominance

José Mourinho left La Cartuja with the feeling that Real Madrid had deserved much more. The defeat against Real Betis (1-0), decided with a goal from Parrot in the 80th minute and a missed penalty from Mbappé in stoppage time, left the white team without a reward despite the dominance and chances that, according to the Portuguese coach, they accumulated during a good part of the match.

"We played a great game. Sometimes you lose and you don't know why, sometimes you lose and you don't know how to explain it," Mourinho said at a press conference. The Madrid coach especially highlighted the control of his team and the performance of the defense: "We were very dominant. The center backs were imperial and controlled absolutely everything."

The Portuguese also highlighted Madrid's offensive production, which found it difficult to transform its superiority into goals. “We had a lot of offensive play and a lot of scoring opportunities,” he said. In his view, the result would not have reflected the merits of the team even if the match had ended in a draw. "If it ends in a tie we leave frustrated because we have done more. Imagine the defeat," he explained.

Mourinho preferred not to evaluate the referee's decisions. The Portuguese explained that he had not yet been able to review the plays: "I haven't seen them in detail. I haven't seen them in the locker room, I can't comment on them."

He did have words of recognition for Carlos Espí, both his contribution and his attitude despite the uncertainty about the offside position. “If he has ten minutes and scores a fantastic goal, which may or may not be offside, he has done his job well,” he said. The Madrid coach also predicted a promising future for the footballer: "He has great potential and will always get better, because he is also humble, hard-working and wants to learn. I couldn't be happier with the boy."
