NYT analysis… Expectations for significant progress are low in the third meeting of Trump's second term in office.

The New York Times (NYT) predicted on the 21st (local time) that Chinese President Xi Jinping, ahead of the US-China summit, is expected to use a 'time-saving' strategy that focuses on maintaining the status quo rather than actual results.

It is analyzed that the strategic focus is on building strength internally by staging a spectacular US-China summit to suit US President Donald Trump's tastes, while extending the ceasefire with the US.

In fact, the NYT pointed out that the two leaders' 'timetables' are working completely differently.

President Trump, who is tied up in the war with Iran and has midterm elections ahead of him in November, is urgent for immediate results. On the other hand, there are speculations that President Xi, who is already in his third term as supreme leader, will look to rule for a fourth consecutive term or longer.

From President Xi's perspective, there is not much incentive to make a new 'big deal' with the United States beyond extending the trade war truce.

By continuing the truce with the United States for now, China can buy time to rebuild its internal economy, which has suffered from the recent real estate crisis, high youth unemployment, and overproduction, and to strengthen industry and technology, which are key areas of strategic competition with the United States.

In the end, it is predicted that it will be difficult to expect progress on major issues such as 'AI speed control theory' other than extending the trade truce at this US-China summit.

NYT analyzed, “President Xi appears to have calculated that the best way to deal with the United States is a summit meeting that is visually flashy but has virtually no substance.”

Meanwhile, the British daily Financial Times (FT) reported that China's rare earth exports to the United States have decreased ahead of the U.S.-China summit.

According to China's official customs data, China's rare earth exports to the US last month fell 20% from the previous month to 512 tons. It also decreased by 13% compared to the same month last year.

As rare earths are key minerals essential for high-tech industries, the supply issue of rare earths is expected to be a major issue at this US-China summit.

The two leaders will sit face to face at the White House on the 24th. This is the third US-China summit since Trump's second term in office.
