An indictment for Andrea Sempio seems increasingly closer after the Pavia Prosecutor's Office closed, for the second time, the new investigations against him for the murder of Chiara Poggi, which occurred in Garlasco in 2007. A crime for which the victim's ex-boyfriend, Alberto Stasi, was definitively convicted, for which instead a request for review of the sentence could materialise.
"The killer's shoe compatible with Sempio's foot"
Yesterday the prosecutors filed new documents, including some consultations, to strengthen the charges against Sempio, and served another notice of conclusion of the investigation, which is a prelude to the request for trial for murder aggravated by cruelty and hatred. The technical consultants of the Pavia Prosecutor's Office "have filed a note on the dimensions of a size 42 Frau model shoe which is compatible with the measurements of Andrea Sempio's foot", wrote the prosecutor Fabio Napoleone in a statement, referring to the print with a dot sole which was attributed to Alberto Stasi. The same experts, responding to the advice of Sempio's defense (which will file more within 20 days), confirmed the attribution of the now well-known handheld trace 33 to the 38-year-old.

"Chiara Poggi could have survived even 60 minutes"
The results of the new analyzes carried out by Cristina Cattaneo and the "co-consultant Prof. Leone" testify "concretely for the production of the lesions not immediately prior to death, but prior to death with an interval approximately at least between 15 and 30 minutes, without the possibility of excluding a more prolonged overall survival of up to 60 minutes", explains the Pavia Prosecutor's Office. And this would exclude, according to the time window now known in the trials, the presence of Stasi at the crime scene. Furthermore, according to the prosecutor's consultants, the hypothesis that all the injuries are attributable exclusively to non-specific phenomena of falling, impact, dragging or movement, as supported by the defense documents, is not "consistent with the overall picture". And on the topic of the DNA on Chiara Poggi's nails, attributable for the prosecution to Andrea Sempio, the prosecutors limit themselves to explaining that "the supplementary notes in the genetic-forensic field drawn up by the Technical Defense Consultant Sempio, Dr. Marina Baldi, were analytically evaluated and refuted by Prof. Carlo Previderè and Dr. Pierangela Grignani, consultants to the Prosecutor".

The DNA on the pedals that could "exonerate Stasi 19 years ago"
And an unprecedented element also emerges in favor of Alberto Stasi. The genetic profile determined on 19 September 2007, writes Napoleone, "obtained from the bicycle pedals" and attributed at the time by the prosecutors' consultants to Chiara Poggi "had tested totally negative the following day", but of these "two electrophoretic runs" there was "no trace found in any document of the proceeding/trial held against Alberto Stasi". A fact discovered by the defense consultants to "exonerate" the former Bocconi student and which the technical consultants of the Pavia Prosecutor's Office "confirmed" by speaking of the "existence of the negative electrophoretic runs of 20 September 2007". Napoleone explains that "consultancy was acquired" from the experts Ugo Rici and Pasquale Linarello "nominated by Alberto Stasi's defence" with at its center "the Raw Data delivered to the Pavia Prosecutor's Office by the Parma Ris on 6.11.2025" as part of the recently concluded investigation into Sempio. In those "Raw Data" the two experts "detected the presence of counter-analysis (two electrophoretic runs dated 09.20.2007) of the bu_p sample (the same sample that revealed the presence of the victim's DNA on the pedals of Umberto Dei's bike and which led to Stasi's arrest) which were totally negative, counter-analysis suitable, in their opinion, to exonerate Alberto Stasi already 19 years ago, but not existing in the file" against the latter. In other words, writes the Pavia Prosecutor's Office, "the genetic profile determined just the day before (19.09.2007) from the only available extract obtained from the bicycle pedals (exhibit bu_p) and attributed by the technical consultant of the Public Prosecutor at the time 'beyond any reasonable doubt' to the victim, was found to be totally negative the following day (20.09.2007), when the same consultant had carried out new analyses. Of these two electrophoretic runs of the 20.09.2007 and the related completely negative traces, no trace was found in any document of the proceedings/trial held against Stasi Alberto".

Sempio's defense and the Poggi family: "No new elements"
For Sempio's lawyers, Liborio Cataliotti and Angela Taccia, "there are no new pieces of evidence" and "the alteration of evidence against Stasi has nothing to do with the accusation made against Sempio". Same opinion expressed by the Poggi family: according to lawyers Tizzoni and Compagna, there is no new data. "We hope - they say - that the matter can be submitted as soon as possible to the competent Court of Appeal, which will be able to note the absence of any new element, hopefully putting an end to the improper search for an alternative culprit".
The scenario of a trial review for Stasi
Meanwhile, Stasi's defense asks to "ascertain all responsibilities, so that what happened to Stasi cannot and must never happen again". The reference seems to be to the investigations of the Ris carabinieri, on which however the former general Luciano Garofano, commander of the Scientific Investigations Department twenty years ago, says he is convinced of the "honesty" of his collaborators to the point of excluding irregularities. Even more so, he recalls, that "the analyzes were carried out in the presence of the party's consultants", a detail which in his opinion "clears the field of any doubt". Giada Bocellari and Antonio De Rensis, Stasi's lawyers, have an opposite opinion, speaking of a "sad page for justice" although they say they are comforted by the ability of justice itself to remedy the situation. To present a request for review of the trial there is a need for an element of 'novelty' which is capable of overturning the criminal judgment and demonstrates that the convicted person should have been acquitted. The conclusions of the Pavia Prosecutor's Office could provide several, such as the killer's shoe compatible with that of Sempio and the genetic profile on the bicycle pedal, a fact which for the defense "irremediably directed the investigations of 2007" and on which "a large part of the accusatory castle against Stasi was built", including "the non-existent exchange/replacement of pedals in 2014 and the hypothesis of bicycles that never existed, which then found space in the 16-year prison sentence inflicted on Stasi".
