Putin orders a three-day pause on attacks against Kyiv as US special envoys arrive in Ukraine seeking a peace solution

Mr. Putin ordered a halt to the attack on Kiev for three days, while US special envoys arrived in the Ukrainian capital to find a peaceful solution.

"The President and Supreme Commander-in-Chief of Russia has ordered not to attack Kiev for three days, from 0:00 tonight. This decision is related to the preparation and conduct of negotiations by US special envoys in Kiev," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on September 5.

Previously, two US special envoys, Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law, and Steve Witkoff, went to Moscow to discuss the war in Ukraine. According to Mr. Peskov, President Vladimir Putin will meet two US envoys at the Kremlin later on September 5.

President Trump on September 4 said Washington has a new specific proposal to end the war that has entered its fifth year between Russia and Ukraine. The head of the White House did not give details about the content of this proposal, but said that Witkoff and Kushner would bring a peace proposal to Moscow and Kiev.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on September 4 that two US envoys would leave Moscow and fly to Kiev on September 6. Their move to the Ukrainian capital by plane is a very unusual move, because Ukrainian airspace has been closed since 2022 due to fighting and foreign leaders often travel by train from Poland to Kiev.

In a post on social network Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that 53 Ukrainian UAVs entered Russian airspace on September 5, significantly lower than the average recorded in recent months.

The US President has repeatedly vowed to mediate to end the Ukraine conflict. However, he encountered difficulties in his efforts to bring Moscow and Kiev to an agreement, when the two sides could not find common ground.

President Putin said that Russia is ready to welcome more parties to participate in negotiations on Ukraine if they can make substantive contributions, but will not accept "a meaningless formality of diplomacy." The Russian leader specifically mentioned two special envoys Kushner and Witkoff, describing them as "sincere dialogue partners and always welcome guests".

Since the last round of peace negotiations in February, both sides have increased long-range air strikes deep into each other's territory, while fighting at sea has also escalated. On the ground, the front lines remain largely unchanged, with Russia making only small advances in its efforts to control the entire Donbass region.
