TÜREB 2025 Inventory Research reveals that the transition from installation to operation and maintenance phase in Türkiye's wind energy sector is accelerating.
AI-generated summary
Türkiye's wind energy installed capacity has exceeded 16 gigawatts. The industry is transitioning from the installation phase to the operation and maintenance phase.
TÜREB 2025 Consultancy, Maintenance and Other Services Inventory Research prepared by the Turkish Wind Energy Association (TÜREB) drew attention to the growing importance of operation and maintenance services in wind energy in Türkiye.
The study examined the wind fleet in operation, consisting of a total of 472 power plants and more than 5 thousand turbines, with a mechanical installed power exceeding 16 gigawatts, and specifically addressed the needs in the areas of domestic service capacity, spare parts supply, engineering services and life extension.
According to the research prepared based on July data, the estimated size of the annual operation and maintenance market of onshore wind power plants, calculated based on international reference prices, reached approximately 350 million dollars.
According to the research, while Türkiye's installed capacity in wind energy is growing, the maintenance and service needs of operating power plants are also increasing.
Accordingly, the sector is moving from a growth phase focused on power plant installation to an operation and asset management phase.
It is anticipated that maintenance, repair and renewal works in the existing fleet will gain more importance in the near future.
According to the research, nearly half of the estimated annual operations and maintenance market ($178 million) is accounted for by turbines in the 2 to 4 megawatt power range.
In the study, the age distribution of the power plants in operation was also examined. Accordingly, 2 thousand 512 megawatts of capacity, 15.5 percent of the total operating capacity, consists of turbines that have completed the 15-year operating period.
Re-strengthening works in wind power plants will increase
The contract end projection of the research also reveals how the service market, which is largely in the hands of turbine manufacturers today, will open up over time.
According to the calculation made assuming that the power plants are out of the scope of the current contract 15 years after their commissioning, the service value that will become re-biddable is calculated to reach approximately 284 million dollars cumulatively by 2041.
Contract expirations are especially concentrated in the years 2035 and 2039-2040. The research points out that service providers who have completed their capacity, technical team and commercial preparation before these waves can gain a first mover advantage.
29.6 percent of the wind capacity consists of old generation turbines under 3 megawatts, and 38.2 percent consists of modern turbines of 4.2 megawatts and above.
Life extension and repowering studies, especially in older generation turbines, are among the areas that may become more popular in the near future.
Increasing the number of qualified technical employees and strengthening the maintenance-repair capacity in Türkiye is also gaining importance in order to meet the increasing maintenance and service needs.
Emphasis on strong operation and maintenance ecosystem
TÜREB Chairman of the Board of Directors İbrahim Erden, whose views were included in the statement, stated that the research provides important data in terms of preserving the long-term performance of the power plants in operation.
Stating that the installed capacity that Türkiye has reached in wind energy shows that the sector now needs a strong operation and maintenance ecosystem, Erden said:
"Our operational mechanical installed power exceeding 16 gigawatts creates a significant economic and technical value. In order to preserve this value for many years, the maintenance, repair and renewal processes of the power plants must be managed correctly. The annual market size of approximately 350 million dollars, revealed by our research, clearly shows the scale of this field. Especially the high share of gearbox turbines with a capacity of 2 thousand 512 megawatts, reaching the 15-year operation threshold, provides an important framework for which technical areas may be needed more in the coming period. TÜREB "Our aim as a company is to contribute to the development of new collaborations between investors, service providers, manufacturers and other stakeholders through studies that reveal the needs of the sector."
According to TÜREB's 2025 research, Türkiye's annual operation and maintenance market for wind energy installed power exceeding 16 GW has reached 350 million dollars. It is stated that the sector has evolved from installation to maintenance and asset management.
