The trial of the defendant who killed his wife in Samsun began

It was stated that there had been problems for a long time between Yücel Günegül (49), who lives in the Rasathane District of Samsun's İlkadım district, and his wife of 25 years, Fatma Günegül (41).

It was reported that Günegül was arrested on April 9, 2025, on the grounds that he injured his wife in the shoulder with a knife, strangled her and beat her, and was later released during the trial.

Allegedly, Yücel Günegül went out with his wife on September 25, 2025, saying, "Come on, let's go to the village, I have a surprise for you, I will take you to beautiful places." The couple went to the village house in Hacınaipli District of Canik district.

Later that night, an argument broke out between the couple.

According to the accusation reflected in the indictment, Günegül hit his wife's head against the wall and forced her to the ground, then squeezed her throat with one hand and hit her face several times with a ceramic coffee mug with the other hand.

Fatma Günegül lost her life in the incident that took place on the balcony of the house. It was stated that Günegül went to Asarcık district with his vehicle after covering his wife with a quilt.

Günegül, who was stopped by gendarmerie teams at night for driving under the influence of alcohol, was taken to Asarcık State Hospital for a forensic report.

Here, blood stains were noticed on his shoes, and during the check, blood stains were also found on his socks. It was reported that Günegül first said that a nail stuck in her foot, and then said that she hit her husband's head against the wall and strangled him.

When gendarmerie teams went to the house, they found Fatma Günegül dead.

Aggravated life imprisonment was requested for Yücel Günegül, who was arrested after the incident, for "intentional murder against his wife".

The first hearing of the case was held at Samsun 2nd High Criminal Court.

Günegül said that he and his wife went to the village house on the day of the incident and started arguing while drinking coffee on the balcony.

In his defense, the defendant said, "I also slapped him. When he slapped me, he attacked me and grabbed my hair. While we were fighting, he hit his head on the marble stone on the balcony. I thought my wife had fainted. I tried to commit suicide by tying the rope. My wife's coffee was in a mug, I did not hit her in the face. I had a glass cup in my hand. Before the suicide attempt, I called my sister and said, 'We had a fight with your aunt, call an ambulance.' I want this matter to be investigated. The victim lost his balance while struggling. A momentary rage." "I regret the incident happened, I seek refuge in your justice," he said.

Günegul requested his release and asked for electronic bracelets and house arrest if necessary.

The couple's daughter, Selma Yenigün, who was heard as a witness at the hearing, stated that she had no complaints against her father and argued that the defendant's version of the events was correct.

Yenigün said, "My father has already forgiven my mother many times. I want her to be released."

The defendant's lawyer, Ertan Avcı, also requested the release of his client, arguing that he did not act with the intention of killing his wife.

The court decided to continue Yücel Günegül's detention.

The hearing was postponed to a later date to hear other witnesses.
