Kalie McCrystal had been missing on the Matterhorn since September 1st. The family of the 38-year-old Canadian skyrunner has now published a letter in which they thank the rescue teams and effectively announce the woman's passing.

"It's been two weeks since our beloved Kalie disappeared during a reconnaissance on the Matterhorn. Since then, the Guardia di Finanza mountain rescue team has worked tirelessly, exploring every possible lead available to them. They demonstrated unwavering professionalism, kindness and commitment in the search for Kalie. It was very important for our family, throughout the search, to know that everything that could be done was actually being done."

"The outpouring of love and support for Kalie was truly incredible. The constant support of Hillary Gerardi, who first raised the alarm about Kalie, was indispensable for us. Friends and loved ones from all over the world rallied and went beyond their limits to help us find her and bring her home. It was touching to see how much love surrounded her", say Wendy Cooper & Jody McCrystal, Kalie's mother and sister who then hypothesize how the facts may have happened:

“The Matterhorn is as majestic as it is relentless. Despite Kalie's exceptional skill and experience in technical mountain environments, including her previous experience on the Matterhorn itself, everything we know now suggests that she fell on the way down. Despite the efforts of so many people over the past few weeks, the search has not led us to Kalie. This is not the ending we were hoping for, and it is very difficult to accept.”

"We would have liked to find her with all our hearts - they conclude - but we find some peace in knowing that she was doing what made her feel most alive until her last moments, and that now she remains in the mountains where she truly felt at home".
