Senatorial elections 2026: 1,681 candidates vying for 178 seats

1,681 candidates are currently in the running for the 178 seats to be filled in the Senate on September 27, 2026. Nearly 94,000 electors will be called upon to renew half of the Luxembourg Palace. A particularly observed election, while the National Rally hopes to make a historic breakthrough in the hemicycle.

Two voting methods depending on the size of the department

Not all senators are elected according to the same rules. In the departments which designate one or two senators, the vote is by majority in two rounds. To be elected in the first round, a candidate must receive an absolute majority of the votes cast and at least 25% of registered voters. Failing this, a relative majority is sufficient for the second round. From three seats to be filled, the voting becomes proportional: the lists then compete in a single round. In total, this voting method concerns 119 of the 178 renewed seats.
