SPD ministers are calling for an action program against heat waves and climate protection in the Basic Law

In view of forest fires and the ongoing heat wave, several SPD ministers are calling for a government action program. In her opinion, this also includes climate protection in the Basic Law.

Berlin. SPD ministers in the federal government are calling for an action program to combat the consequences of heat waves. It is also necessary to anchor climate protection in the Basic Law, according to a joint letter from the ministers, as the news magazine “Spiegel” reported on Sunday.

A corresponding initiative by Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider (SPD) was joined by four other Social Democratic cabinet members, including Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil. The SPD parliamentary group supported the project.

Parliamentary group vice-president Esra Limbacher told the “Rheinische Post” (Monday edition) that the parliamentary group supports the action program against heat and the inclusion of a “joint climate adaptation task” in the Basic Law.

In the paper, the SPD department heads, in addition to environment and finance, also social affairs and labor, construction and development, are pushing for, among other things, a national heat action plan and better heat protection for employees, according to “Spiegel”.

In addition, they are calling for an immediate program to pool existing funding as well as more help for municipalities and social institutions. The Union is skeptical about changing the constitution for climate adaptation.
