Statement from Deputy Minister of Trade Mahmut Gürcan on bagel price control in Istanbul

Deputy Minister of Trade Mahmut Gürcan stated that practices contrary to the price tariffs in force regarding simit sales in Istanbul are closely monitored by the Ministry.

Gürcan shared a post about the increase in bagel prices in Istanbul on the social media platform account of US-based company X.

Stating that ensuring that every product that reaches the table of citizens is presented under fair, transparent and legal conditions is among their main priorities, Gürcan stated that, as the Ministry, they continue inspections in order to protect the economic interests of citizens, to protect consumers against unfair and exorbitant price practices and to establish fair competition conditions in the markets.

Gürcan drew attention to the increase in bagel prices in Istanbul and said:

"Practices contrary to the price tariffs in force regarding simit sales in Istanbul are closely monitored by our Ministry, and whether businesses act in accordance with the legislation is meticulously examined through field inspections.

The heaviest administrative sanctions within the scope of the relevant legislation will be applied to businesses that are found to be selling in violation of price tariffs within the scope of inspections, and all necessary legal and administrative processes will be carried out with determination.

"No practice that causes our consumers to suffer, negatively affects access to basic consumer products and disrupts the healthy functioning of the market will be tolerated."
