Death of FCM fan Hannes Schindler: Public prosecutor reopens investigation

Almost ten years after the death of 1. FC Magdeburg fan Hannes Schindler, the Magdeburg public prosecutor's office says it is reopening the investigation into an intentional homicide.

The trigger is new witness information that became known through journalistic research - specifically through the Süddeutsche Zeitung's podcast “Der Zug”.

In October 2016, Schindler was traveling with other supporters on a regional train from Haldensleben in the Börde district. According to MDR, there was a large group of Halleschen FC fans on the same train, including people from the ultra scene at the time who were returning from an away game. Schindler fell from the moving train and died shortly afterwards from his serious injuries.

According to MDR, the current Kripo live broadcast also reported on the case on Sunday evening and also asked for witness statements. As a spokeswoman told MDR Saxony-Anhalt, the Magdeburg police station had not received any new information after the television broadcast until midday on Monday.
