Climate crisis warning from expert: We started to experience 2050 temperatures in 2025

Dokuz Eylül University (DEU) Science and Technology Application and Research Center Board Member and Hydrogeology Expert Prof. Dr. Celalettin Şimşek pointed out that climate simulations in the world are taking place rapidly and said, "The recent periods we have experienced, especially the year 2025, have been a serious indicator in this regard. We started to experience the temperatures we expected to experience in 2050 in 2025."

Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB) Chamber of Environmental Engineers (CMO) Izmir Branch organized a panel titled "Climate Change, Water, Agriculture and Food from Izmir to COP31" in order to discuss local problems and solution suggestions before the 31st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP31). Speaking at the opening of the event, ÇMO İzmir Branch President Arzu Yücel stated that the COP31 action agenda covers 11 main headings and emphasized that many areas from water management to agriculture, from energy to urban resilience directly intersect with environmental engineering and different disciplines. Yücel said, "We have to express our criticisms and suggestions with a stance in favor of science, public and social benefit. We are discussing what messages we will give to COP31 by combining our problems specifically in Izmir. Our meetings will continue on the topics of circular economy, resilient cities, public health, justice and ecosystem and green transformation. After the last session on October 15, we will create our declaration 'From Izmir to COP31' and share it with the public."

'MELTING OF GLACIERS HAS REACHED AN UNSTOPPABLE LEVEL'

Stating that extreme droughts and unpredictable weather events are increasing in the world, Prof. Dr. Şimşek said, "With certain simulations, we can see what will happen in 2050 and 2100. However, the recent periods we have experienced, especially the year 2025, have raised a serious alarm on this issue. We started to experience the temperature values ​​we expected in 2050 in 2025. These temperatures caused casualties in Europe and France." Prof. Dr. Stating that biodiversity is disappearing in many places in the world, Şimşek said, "In a study conducted this year, it is said that 37 large metropolises will end with the rise of the oceans between 2070 and 2100. In Türkiye, Istanbul and Izmir are among these metropolises. The melting of glaciers has reached an unstoppable level. There were 260 lakes in Türkiye. These are very few left."

'THE TEMPERATURE FELT WILL INCREASE TO 70-80 DEGREES'

Drawing attention to the water crisis experienced throughout Türkiye and in Izmir, Prof. Dr. Şimşek said, "In our country, an increase of 2 degrees in average temperatures is expected by 2040, 4 degrees by 2070, and 5 degrees by 2100. This means that the temperature felt in the summer months will increase to 70-80 degrees. We recently experienced this personally in Izmir; our dams were exhausted, and the rains that came at the last moment came to our rescue while drawing down the bottom water, which we call 'dead volume'. We overcrowded the cities." "Mass epidemics occur in a metropolis where you cannot provide water for 3-4 days. That is why we need manageable cities," he said.
