Weidel supports Siegmund's move to abolish the Office for the Protection of the Constitution

AfD leader Alice Weidel has supported the initiative of her party's top candidate in Saxony-Anhalt, Ulrich Siegmund, to examine the abolition of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. “Of course I support this initiative,” Weidel told the news portal “The Pioneer”. The Office for the Protection of the Constitution should be “abolished in its current form or at least fundamentally reformed”.

Siegmund had previously stated in the “Unscripted” podcast that he wanted to deal with the future of the state’s Office for the Protection of the Constitution in an “open-ended” manner in the event of an AfD-led state government.

AfD sole government in Saxony-Anhalt not ruled out

The AfD state association in Saxony-Anhalt is classified by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution as a “secure right-wing extremist effort”. Before the state elections on September 6th, the party with its top candidate Siegmund is well ahead of the other parties. A sole AfD government in the eastern German state after the election cannot be ruled out.

The Office for the Protection of the Constitution is used to “observe and suppress the political opposition,” Weidel told “The Pioneer.” He is not an independent authority, the heads of the constitutional protection authorities at federal and state level are political officials and have to follow instructions from the interior minister.
