The Ministry of Economic Affairs pointed out that the review of the demolition permit for the China National Fire coal-fired unit went smoothly and there was no objection in the inter-ministerial meeting.

Mayor Lu Xiuyan of Taichung City is concerned about the dismantling plan of the existing coal-fired units of the Taichung Power Plant and requested the Ministry of Economic Affairs to issue a dismantling permit before Taichung will issue an operation permit for the new gas-fired units of the Central Fire. The Ministry of Economic Affairs held a review meeting today (10th) on the "Demolition Permit Case for the Special Buildings of Taichung Power Plant's Existing #1 and #2 Coal-Fired Units". After the meeting, the Ministry of Economic Affairs stated that there was no objection in the inter-ministerial meeting and supported the early start of the demolition work in October.

The meeting was chaired by Director Hu Wenzhong of the Department of State-owned Enterprises of the Ministry of Economic Affairs. Taipower's deputy general manager Lu Jinghuang led his team to attend the meeting. The Taichung City Government sent personnel to attend the meeting. After Taipower explained the demolition plan, all participating units agreed to the demolition plan and supported the early start of the demolition work in October. Taipower also stated that the preparatory work for the demolition of the plant has been fully prepared, and it is fully committed to advancing the energy transformation milestone of "increasing gas and reducing coal". Representatives from the Taichung City Government also urged Taipower to complete the demolition as soon as possible during the meeting.

In his summary, Hu Wen-chung pointed out that the State-Owned Industry Corporation will immediately submit the results of the meeting to the Ministry of Economic Affairs for approval, and also reminded Taipower Corporation that when it comes to demolishing chimneys and large buildings with a height of 252 meters, work safety must not be neglected to meet the construction deadline.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs emphasized that the Executive Yuan has announced that the Taichung Power Plant will be coal-free in 2034. Promoting "gas-for-coal" is a consensus reached by the central and local governments and is the best solution to take into account regional power supply security and improve air quality. The Ministry of Economic Affairs will urge Taipower Corporation to continue to implement the substantive actions of "work safety first, environmental protection first" in the future to fulfill its coal reduction commitment. It also calls on the Taichung City Government to approve Taipower Corporation's application for a new unit operation permit as soon as possible, and work with the central government to move towards a sustainable coal-free vision.
