Chungnam National University selected as a support university for ‘Creating 10 Seoul National Universities’… Expected to become a regional growth base

On the 1st, Chungnam National University was selected as a university to support the 'Create 10 Seoul National Universities' package, a key educational national task of the Lee Jae-myung administration, and announced, "We will create a new growth axis for Korea by connecting the science and technology capabilities of Daedeok R&D Special Zone with the high-tech industries of the central region."

In a press release, Chungnam National University emphasized, “We believe that this selection goes beyond support for one university and gives us a national role and responsibility,” and added, “We will continue the government’s investment in talent and research, corporate growth and good jobs, and settlement for young people to stay in the region.”

With this project, Chungnam National University plans to connect Daejeon in science and technology, Sejong in administration and policy, and South Chungcheong and North Chungcheong in high-tech industry to become a national base that produces industrial and research personnel in the growth engine fields of the central region, such as next-generation semiconductors and displays, advanced biotechnology, and advanced batteries.

We plan to establish 'NEXUS College of Science and Technology' and 'NEXUS Convergence Research Institute' in 2028 to foster industrial talent with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), corporations, and government-funded research institutes, while also promoting the establishment of an education and research base in the Daejeon, Sejong, and South Chungcheong regions through major transformation in artificial intelligence (AI) and integration with Kongju National University.

The Democratic Party of Korea's Daejeon City Party also commented and expressed its welcome.

The Daejeon City Party of the Democratic Party evaluated, "It will not only raise Chungnam National University's educational and research competitiveness to the next level, but will also be an important opportunity to connect Daejeon's scientific and technological capabilities, where KAIST, Daedeok Research and Development Special Zone, and local companies are concentrated, into a new growth engine for the region."

He continued, “It is a meaningful starting point for expanding the educational and research capabilities and talent training base concentrated in the metropolitan area to the region and advancing balanced national development,” and emphasized, “We must create a virtuous cycle in which the competitiveness of universities leads to regional competitiveness, and regional growth leads to the competitiveness of the Republic of Korea.”

Immediately after the news of the selection was announced, a series of articles and comments welcoming the selection were posted on ‘Everytime’, an anonymous college student community used by Chungnam National University students.

On this day, the Ministry of Education held a briefing on 'Results of selection of national key national universities that will drive regional growth' at the Seoul Government Complex and announced that Pusan ​​National University, Chonnam National University, and Chungnam National University were finally selected as package support universities. A budget of approximately 70 billion won per school will be invested annually in these universities until 2030.
