Taichung man Zheng stabbed his ex-girlfriend and current boyfriend with a machete. The court sentenced him to 12 years in prison and ordered him to pay NT$607,600 in compensation.

A man surnamed Zheng from Taichung City was dissatisfied with his ex-girlfriend's child living with her current boyfriend Li Nan. He ignored the fact that there was a sleeping child in the room. He broke into the room with a machete and stabbed Li Nan wildly. Li Nan was so injured that he couldn't breathe and fell to the ground. Zheng Nan continued to attack. After a recent hearing, the Taichung District Court sentenced Zheng Nan to 12 years for attempted murder. In the civil part, Li Nan was ordered to pay NT$607,600, which can be appealed.

The incident occurred in July 2022. Before the incident, Zheng Nan called Li Nan to negotiate but failed. That afternoon, he brought a machete into the room where Li Nan and the young child were sleeping. He slashed at Li Nan with the knife while he was sleeping. When he woke up, Li Nan could only resist with his bare hands and feet. As a result, Zheng Nan was slashed in the chest, his right foot was fractured, and the tendons of his left foot were also severed.

Li Nan claimed that after being stabbed, he "couldn't breathe" and fell to the ground, but Zheng Nan still did not stop the attack. Zheng Nan denied the intention to kill, arguing that Li Nan's provocative tone of voice made him feel unbalanced. Originally, he just wanted to talk to the other party to explain the matter clearly, but because he was worried that the other party would suffer a lot, he improvised and brought the machete to the scene behind his waistband.

The court held that Zheng Nanxuan suddenly attacked the victim while he was sleeping and continued to slash at the head, chest and limbs. Even though Li Nan fell to the ground, he did not stop, which obviously caused great danger to his life and had uncertain intent to kill. Not to mention that there were young children in the room at the time of the crime, who could be affected by the knife at any time. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison for attempted murder.

Li Nan filed another civil claim for compensation, claiming medical expenses, the landlord's forfeiture of the deposit and moral comfort money, etc., totaling 1.468 million yuan. Zheng Nan did not dispute the criminal liability, but believed that the civil compensation amount was too high. The civil court considered the extent of Li Nan's injuries and the impact on his life, and ruled that Zheng Nan should pay compensation of 607,600 yuan. The remaining requests were not allowed due to insufficient evidence, and the entire case can still be appealed.
