Seven members of a suspected human trafficking ring were arrested for attempting to send people to China for organ harvesting, with prosecutors seeking the maximum seven-year sentence for each defendant.

The case was uncovered when the Criminal Investigation Bureau found texts about a human trafficking ring while investigating a young man surnamed Chang （張）.

Under the bureau’s instruction, the Taoyuan District Prosecutors’ Office investigated the division of labor within the ring.

A 26-year-old man surnamed Chiang （江） is suspected of leading the ring, planning routes for the victims and instructing coconspirators via Telegram, prosecutors said.

Chiang’s 23-year-old cousin contacted organ buyers in China, while three other members aged 22 to 27 recruited three more young people to join, promising them the equivalent of NT$100,000 to NT$300,000 in Tether for each person they sent, they said.

The ring posted false offers on social media of high-paying jobs — such as money mules or smugglers — to lure people to a residence in Taoyuan’s Jhongli District （中壢）, where group members confined them and prepared to send them overseas, the prosecutors said.

None of the three people held were sent out of Taiwan, they added.

Prosecutors searched five locations on May 21 and July 15, seizing mobile phones and other evidence.

They detained seven suspects, including Chiang, four of whom are being held incommunicado pending trial.

All seven suspects were indicted on charges including participation in a criminal organization, attempted human trafficking, attempted fraud to induce people to leave Taiwan and attempted organ harvesting for profit through deception under the Organized Crime Prevention Act （組織犯罪防制條例）, the Human Trafficking Prevention Act （人口販運防制法） and the Criminal Code.

Prosecutors recommended the maximum sentence of seven years for each defendant, saying their actions constituted a serious human trafficking offense and grave contravention of human rights.

They urged people not to fall for suspicious online job offers or take illegal jobs for quick money, adding that authorities would continue investigating such crimes to protect public safety.
