The global passenger car market shrank by 5.9 percent in August 2026

In August 2026, the global passenger car and light commercial vehicle market contracted by 5.9 percent year-on-year to 6,857,920 units. This was reported by Avtostat with reference to data from the consulting company GlobalData.

For eight months of 2026, the global car market volume amounted to 56,847,175 vehicles, which is 4.1 percent less than the same period last year.

China remained the largest market in August with 1,675,599 cars sold, but sales there fell by 24.5 percent. In the United States, 1,400,702 vehicles were sold, which is 4.7 percent less than August 2025. Western Europe showed growth of 5.3 percent to 820,329 units. Eastern European markets decreased by 5.1 percent to 362,142 vehicles.

India showed the greatest growth. Here sales increased by 34.6 percent, to 511,372 vehicles. In South America, sales rose 14.4 percent to 304,806 units. Japan added 5.9 percent to 315,885. Canada showed a microscopic increase of 0.1 percent (168,454 units), while South Korea lost 19.7 percent (109,681).

The global car market shows negative dynamics for the eighth month in a row, that is, throughout 2026.
