Paju Shinsan Elementary School's closed Yeongjang Branch School was transformed into a 'Sunshine School'... Scheduled to open in 2028

The closed Yeongjang branch of Shinsan Elementary School in Paju, Gyeonggi Province will be transformed into a ‘Sunshine School.’

Paju City and the Paju Office of Education announced on the 16th that they were finally selected for the 'Office of Education-Local Government Joint Cooperation Project Using Closed Schools' contest hosted by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Public Administration and Security.

This contest was held to discover an excellent cooperation model that utilizes closed schools owned by the Office of Education as educational facilities or community-linked facilities.

Paju City and the Paju Office of Education participated in a contest for the project to create 'Yeongjangni Sunshine School' on the Yeongjang branch site of Shinsan Elementary School.

Yongwon Sunshine School will utilize 7,473㎡ of the site of an abandoned school located in Yongwongri, Gwangtan-myeon, and create an open complex space that can be used by local residents and visitors as well as a base for experiential education on climate and energy ecology for students.

The total project cost is 2.2 billion won.

It is adjacent to Majang Lake, which attracts many visitors every year, and is designed as a local-specific eco-friendly space that combines education, experience, and relaxation functions.

Main facilities include education-linked solar power facilities, agricultural solar power experience center, real-time energy inspection system, zero energy education space, resident rest area and walking trail, and outdoor exercise and play space.

On weekdays, it is a climate and energy field experience learning space for infants and elementary, middle, and high school students. On nights and weekends, it is open as a lifelong learning, meeting and communication space, and health and relaxation space for local residents. The closed school is operated as a win-win model with the local community.

Paju City is responsible for cooperation in operating time slots for residents, linking lifelong learning programs, promoting tourism resources, and regional linkage functions, while the Paju Office of Education is responsible for providing land, creating facilities centered on student education, and operating programs.

Yongwon Sunlight School is scheduled to open in 2028 after going through follow-up procedures such as design and licensing.
