The Muslim Mindanao-Moroccan Autonomous Region of the Philippines held its first parliamentary election, and violence was reported leaving 4 dead and 18 injured.

The "Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao" (BARMM) in the southern Philippines held its first parliamentary election today. The military said that as of 7 p.m., the election was generally peaceful, but violence was still reported in some towns, resulting in at least four deaths and 18 injuries.

In BARMM's first parliamentary election, approximately 2.39 million voters voted for the 80-seat autonomous regional council. Observers say this symbolizes the transition from a transitional government composed of members appointed by the Philippine president to an elected autonomous regional government.

Since the relevant areas are full of armed forces, the military is responsible for supporting regional security maintenance.

Ronald Suscano, spokesman for the Philippine Army's 6th Infantry Division, said in a radio program tonight that among the 37 villages in Cotabato City, tensions occurred in about 4 to 5 villages, while voting in the remaining areas was generally calm.

Suscano confirmed that an election-related shooting occurred in a village in Cotabato last night, killing three people and injuring 15 others; there was also a grenade explosion in which the gunman was injured and died in hospital.

So far, at least 4 people have been confirmed dead.

This morning, another shooting incident occurred near a primary school in Cotabato City by supporters of different candidates. It was confirmed that one policeman and two civilians were injured, bringing the total number of people injured in election violence to 18.

In addition, vehicles were vandalized in Cotabato City. Two vehicles reported to belong to local chiefs were vandalized, which is suspected to be related to the political stance of some political party supporters.
