Jeonnam Gwangju Unified Special City pays 4.1 billion won in advance for restoration costs before Chuseok to fisheries affected by high temperatures

Jeonnam Gwangju Unified Special City announced on the 22nd that it will pay 4.1 billion won in recovery funds secured with government funds to the 143 fish that participated in the emergency release before Chuseok to prevent damage to farmed fish due to high temperatures in the summer.

As the high-temperature warning continued this summer, the integrated city conducted an emergency release of fish to prevent mass mortality of farmed fish and minimize damage.

143 fisheries from four cities and counties, including Yeosu, participated and released 9.36 million fish, including rockfish and filefish.

Damage recovery expenses (70% national funds, 30% local funds) will be paid after the high temperature warning is lifted and after the damage is investigated and a recovery plan is established.

The integrated city decided to first pay recovery expenses secured with government funds to ease the management burden on fishermen facing difficulties ahead of Chuseok and to support stable fishing activities.

The remaining recovery cost, which consists of local expenses, will be paid after Chuseok, after the damage is investigated and a recovery plan is established.

Currently, a high temperature advisory is being issued for Yeosu, Wando, and Heuksando, with the water temperature in the coastal waters of Gwangju, Jeollanam-do being 24 to 25 degrees.

The Unified City plans to operate a comprehensive situation room and continue to inspect fishing grounds and investigate damage sites until the high temperature warning is lifted.

Jeon Chang-woo, head of the Eco-Friendly Fisheries Department of Jeonnam Gwangju Integrated Special City, said, "We pushed for early payment of recovery fees before the Chuseok holiday to stabilize the management of fishermen who are having difficulties due to continued high water temperatures. As the high temperature warning is still in place, we will do our best to reduce damage and protect farmed fish until the special warning is lifted."
