National Taiwan Normal University holds a lecture for education masters. Experts point out that the shortage of teachers has become a national security issue.

National Taiwan Normal University held an "Education Master Lecture" today and invited many important people in the education sector to share that the shortage of teachers was pointed out by Huang Rongcun, the former dean of the Examination Yuan, as a national security issue. Huang Kunhui, chairman of the Professor Huang Kunhui Education Foundation, believed that "professional resilience" and "social responsibility" are the top priorities for "becoming a good teacher" and called on the government to comprehensively review the teacher training system, regulations and courses, and implement "respect for teachers" into institutional guarantees and fair treatment.

The "Education Master Lecture" invited Huang Kunhui to give the lecture, and was attended by Huang Rongcun, former Minister of Education Wu Qingji, Pan Wenzhong and others. Huang Kunhui pointed out that the concept of sustainable education must be based on three major balances, including the co-prosperity of personal development and social progress, the twin engines of justice and excellence, and the mutual checks and balances of power and rights. He emphasized that education should not be biased towards authority or laissez-faire, but must strike a balance and maintain tension between authority and freedom, and clearly protect the rights and interests of stakeholders.

Speaking of "achieving good teachers", Huang Kunhui believes that modern teachers have transformed from traditional lecturers into "guides" who guide, inspire and accompany exploration. In addition to professional knowledge, good teachers also need professional beliefs, professional enthusiasm, professional ethics and love for education. Among them, "love for education" is an important foundation for the teaching profession, which means respecting human dignity, believing in human possibilities, and patiently accompanying students' development.

Huang Kunhui also specifically raised the importance of "professional resilience" and believed that teachers need to have the ability to adjust, recover and continue to improve when facing pressure, uncertainty and various challenges in the education field. Therefore, teacher training should not only focus on pre-service education, but should also establish a complete on-the-job support and professional growth mechanism, and jointly create an environment that supports the professional development of teachers from the aspects of systems, regulations, curriculum and social trust.

Huang Rongcun said that after the childization of children, the problem of homeless teachers has been very serious. However, in recent years, as the economy has grown, there has been a shortage of teachers. Teachers have been burdened by school council meetings, which has also made the situation worse. If the government does not face up to the problem and allow teachers to find a stable identity and stop fleeing, it will cause serious national security problems. Moreover, the advent of the AI ​​​​era will reduce the interaction, performance, and cognitive abilities of students at all levels of education. Without good teachers, the quality of education for the next generation will be worrying.

Pan Wenzhong mentioned that from the regular evaluation of student learning performance in OECD countries, Taiwanese students have withstood the test after the implementation of the new curriculum. In recent years, they have ranked among the top in international competitions, and they have also experienced epidemics in the meantime, showing resilience. At present, semiconductors are the light of Taiwan, sucking away all talents. However, if we continue to develop in this way, we are undermining the foundation of Taiwan. Economic development of intermediate output should not only mean universal cash distribution. The government should increase investment in education.

Wu Qingji believes that "becoming a good teacher" cannot only rely on the enthusiasm of teachers. The society should build a consensus on respecting teachers and the administrative side must also implement professional support and welfare guarantees so that the "love of education" can continue with dignity. Teachers are an important key to the development of education. In addition to focusing on professional abilities, teacher training should also pay attention to teachers’ personality, enthusiasm for education and ability to face the educational scene.
