在香港元朗的一间铁皮仓库里,香港花牌扎作师傅蔡荣基正在缕缕青烟之间,俯身打理一排排竹制花牌,为它们逐一熏香驱虫。一件件色彩鲜亮、形制精巧的花牌在此制作完成,送往香港的街头巷尾,讲述着每一次贺寿、嫁娶、神诞等庆典的故事。近日,蔡荣基接受中新网采访,将他与花牌的数十载情缘娓娓道来。
花牌是香港极具代表性的节庆语言。传统花牌体量宏大,依托三四层楼高的竹架搭建而成,外围包覆红布、粘贴彩字、点缀鲜花,顶部配孔雀造型装饰,两侧辅以龙柱,色彩明艳、辨识度极高,显得颇为壮观。
蔡荣基的父亲蔡创于20世纪60年代入行,与几位戏棚师傅合伙开办荣益花店。因父亲年迈且无人接手店铺,蔡荣基中学时接手家业,并将店铺更名为荣基花牌(香港)有限公司。
时隔多年,谈起首次独立接单的经历,蔡荣基仍历历在目。那时,客户的店名长度超过常规花牌版面的容纳范围,不知如何解决的他只得向父亲请教。父亲提点他,只需将竖向使用的构件横向摆放,灵活调整结构即可化解难题。“东西是死的,人是活的。”父亲对他的教诲,成为蔡荣基多年的从业准则。
蔡荣基坦言,自己生性“怕闷”,不愿固守传统套路、拘泥固有形制。为让花牌更具新意,他不断打磨创新,仅龙纹画法他就创出盘柱、翘尾、藏云等多种样式。他还借鉴本地宴席上乳猪“点睛”的民俗巧思,为花牌龙柱加装小型灯饰。夜幕之下灯影灵动,让盘龙纹样更显生动。
纹样革新之外,蔡荣基大胆“跨界”,将霓虹灯元素融入花牌设计。在中环、旺角等地,新式花牌成为“网红打卡点”,吸引不少市民、游客驻足合影。“花牌与霓虹灯皆是香港的怀旧印记,载着老一代港人的市井人生。”蔡荣基说。
蔡荣基还积极推动花牌文化“出海”。2014年,他与香港艺术家荣念曾合作,远赴美国华盛顿参加史密森尼民俗节,以2000余根竹条搭建巨型花牌装置,打造融合视觉、听觉的跨界艺术空间。不少海外观众被花牌的壮观与精巧所折服。
2014年,花牌扎作技艺被列入香港“非物质文化遗产清单”。为解决传统手艺后继乏人的传承困境,蔡荣基走进中小学课堂,宣传香港花牌扎作技艺。他说,至少让下一代人知道花牌是什么,“因为这是属于香港的珍宝,是一份‘乡愁’。”
