Jeonbuk Superintendent of Education Cheon Ho-seong was accused by a close associate of mentioning the need for election funds.

(Jeonju = Yonhap News) Reporter Na Bo-bae = Jeonbuk Self-Governing Province Superintendent of Education Cheon Ho-seong, who is suspected of mentioning the need for hundreds of millions of won in election funds to his associates, was indicted.

On the 28th, Jeong Jae-seok, chairman of the Jeonbuk Teachers' Union, announced that he had reported Superintendent Cheon to the Jeonbuk Police Agency on charges of violating the political fund law.

However, Chairman Jeong added, “This accusation was made in an individual capacity, not by the Jeonbuk Teachers’ Union.”

Chairman Jeong wrote in the indictment, "If the recording released to the media is true, it goes beyond the simple exchange of opinions and actually involved raising and receiving election funds through methods not prescribed by law or bearing election-related expenses by a third party."

He also stated the reason for the complaint, saying, “As transparency of political funds is an issue directly related to public trust in elections and education administration, please clearly investigate the process of raising election funds.”

Recently, a media outlet published a transcript of Superintendent Cheon telling an associate in June of last year, "I need 500 million won before I can register as a preliminary candidate," and "If I become Superintendent of Education, I will legally resolve the issue, as much as you bet, so give me the money you can afford."

As the report continued, Superintendent Cheon expressed his position, saying, "I would like to clarify that the suspicions raised are not true and that there was no illegal activity in this regard," and "I will continue to carry out my duties without hesitation."
