Russia advocates expansion of the UN Security Council to include Africa, Asia and Latin America

Russia advocates expanding the Security Council to include the states of Africa, Asia and Latin America and does not support the provision of new seats to Western countries.

Some states propose to limit the veto power of permanent members of the Security Council, but for this it is necessary to amend the UN Charter.

MOSCOW, September 29 - RIA Novosti. The next round of intergovernmental negotiations on reform of the UN Security Council may take place in December, said Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Alexander Alimov.

“It must be taken into account that for discussing issues of reforming the UN Security Council, a specialized format is provided - Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGT - ed.). They have been held since 2009 at the General Assembly in the format of its plenary sessions. The previous round of IGT ended in July of this year, the next one will start approximately in December,” Alimov told Izvestia.

According to him, reform models that could receive broad support from the international community have not yet been formed. Russia advocates expanding the Security Council to include the states of Africa, Asia and Latin America and does not support the provision of new seats to Western countries.
