Prison escapee in Adana resisted the police with a hand grenade: 2 arrests

The incident took place on September 24, around 14.30, in the flat on the 3rd floor of Gülüm Apartment in Atakent District of Yüreğir district.

Extortion Bureau teams affiliated with the Public Order Branch Directorate raided the address where prison fugitive Mehmet Şirin Doğan was hiding, wanted for shooting up a workplace.

Seeing the police coming, the suspect opened fire with a gun from the balcony. Many police teams were dispatched to the area after the teams requested reinforcements. While the special operations police took security measures in the surrounding area, other teams opened the door of the apartment. Thereupon, Doğan, while waiting in the corridor of the house, pulled the pin of the grenade and resisted not to surrender. Those living in the building where the incident occurred were also evacuated at this time.

The suspect, whom the police tried to persuade for a long time, was caught by force when he continued to resist. Bomb disposal experts tied the latch of the grenade in the suspect's hand with duct tape and protected it. Suspect Mehmet Şirin Doğan was detained by police teams and taken to the police station. It was stated that the suspect also had a record for 'Fraud' and 'Possession of an unlicensed firearm or ammunition'. Doğan, who was interrogated, said that he did this action to avoid being caught and that he took the grenade from Hasan Çelik.

Upon the suspect's statement, the police launched an operation to capture Çelik and determined that he was hiding in an apartment in Gürselpaşa District of Seyhan district. The police raided the address and detained Hasan Çelik, who was sentenced to 13 years and 20 days in prison for "drug trafficking". Çelik, who was taken to the police, denied the accusation against him.

Mehmet Şirin Doğan and Hasan Çelik, who were referred to the courthouse after their procedures at the police station, were arrested in court.
