AfD is aiming for the office of state parliament president in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania – district council president Thomas Diener under pressure

After its victory in the state elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the AfD wants the office of state parliament president. The SPD has already rejected this. The filling of the corresponding office is currently controversial in the district council of the Mecklenburg Lake District. The CDUplus parliamentary group wants to have Thomas Diener removed as district council president. The former member of the state parliament switched from the CDU to the AfD parliamentary group in the Schwerin parliament and also left the CDU and CDUplus district council factions. The parliamentary group justifies the application by saying that Diener was proposed and elected as a member of the CDUplus parliamentary group in 2024. After he left the group, the group's trust was no longer there.

Even if Diener is not currently an AfD member, his temporary membership in the AfD state parliamentary group means that a faction or party is now represented twice in the presidium of the district council. The application refers to the AfD politician Enrico Schult as the second deputy of the district council president.

District council meeting canceled

Finally, the parliamentary group criticized Diener's behavior at the last meeting of the district council. She had previously complained that Diener had not openly informed the meeting about a motion for dismissal that had already been submitted at the time and had been submitted by an individual district council member. Accordingly, the meeting was canceled after members of various factions left the room in protest.

The meeting was the second part of a long district meeting that had already begun on a previous day. Accordingly, the application for dismissal was not submitted on time, which Diener also pointed out when asked by the dpa. He rejected the allegations made against him.

Joining the AfD?

“I am currently non-party and non-attached in all areas,” said Diener. We'll have to see what happens next. In doing so, he also left open a possible entry into the AfD and a possible entry into the AfD district council group. The farmer did not run again for the state parliament.

Diener expressed skepticism as to whether the recall motion would receive a sufficient majority. 39 votes are necessary. The next district council meeting will take place on October 5th.

In an interview with the “Nordkurier” published on Wednesday, Diener once again clearly criticized his former party: “The CDU was once the representative of rural areas, and here there are communities in which hardly a vote was cast for them. It’s still used, it’s just no longer usable.”
