At least 27 dead in two shootings in South Africa

At least 27 people have been killed in two shootings in South Africa, one in Johannesburg and another on the outskirts of Cape Town, police said.

In the first, men armed with assault rifles killed 17 people and injured 15 in a bar in the Wedela township, southwest of Johannesburg, South African police reported Sunday.

Emergency medical services declared 13 men and 4 women dead at the scene, and the motive for the shooting was unknown, the South African Police Service said in a statement published on

"They apparently searched some customers and took their mobile phones before fleeing the scene in two unmarked vehicles," police said.

Another 15 victims, who had gunshot wounds, were taken to medical centers, police reported.

No arrests have been made, according to the statement. The suspects targeted the tavern and opened fire on customers who were drinking outside before entering the establishment and continuing shooting, according to police.

The second occurred early Sunday morning in the township of Lwandle, outside Cape Town, where ten people were killed and 11 others injured, according to police.

Armed men broke into a leisure establishment at 01:46 local time and opened fire on customers.
