China US Summit: Trade, Technology and Security on the Agenda

According to the news of Xinhua agency, President Xi and his wife Ping Liyuen were welcomed by US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania Trump at Andrews Air Base in Maryland.

In his written statement upon his arrival in the country, Xi stated that China and the USA should be partners, not rivals.

Emphasizing that the visions of "the great resurrection of the Chinese people" and "making America great again" can go hand in hand and complement each other and benefit the world, Xi stated that they want to strengthen a constructive strategic stability relationship where cooperation is the mainstay.

Xi, who made his last visit to the USA in 2015, is visiting this country after 11 years.

Tariffs, Iran and artificial intelligence security will be on the agenda

Chinese President Xi will begin his bilateral talks with US President Trump today at 19:00 ET. The meeting will discuss trade disputes between the two countries, such as tariffs, technology restrictions and the export of rare earth elements, as well as war in the Middle East and artificial intelligence security.

Leaders are expected to focus on maintaining stability in relations by maintaining temporary compromises previously reached on economic and trade disputes.

One of the important topics of the summit will be Iran and the war in the Middle East. The possibility of conflicts disrupting energy transportation in the Straits of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab creates concern for global energy security. The US's expansion of sanctions against Russia and Iran also stands out as a development that may affect the economic dimension of the negotiations with China.

Artificial intelligence security will also be on the agenda of the summit. The two countries are expected to launch an "artificial intelligence dialogue" that includes sharing information about the risks that artificial intelligence may pose and early warning of possible threats. However, while the US focuses on controlling risks to AI security, China advocates for a more comprehensive global AI governance. On the other hand, US artificial intelligence developer companies claim that Chinese companies steal data from their models through a method called "distillation" and ask the Washington administration to take measures to prevent this.

The two countries have previously taken steps to temporarily reduce trade disputes, agreeing to postpone mutual tariffs, loosen export controls on rare earth elements and postpone some trade restrictions.

During Trump's visit to China in May, agreements were reached between the two countries on issues such as establishing trade and investment boards, discussing tariff reductions on some products, and China purchasing passenger planes from the USA.
