Summer counter-exodus: over 27 million trips expected in the first weekend of September

With the arrival of September, summer is now drawing to a close. Although many Italians have chosen to postpone their holidays to avoid excessive confusion and record-breaking heat, the summer exodus officially ends with the first weekend of the month: the Anas Road Mobility Observatory predicts over 27 million journeys between Friday 4th and Sunday 6th on the roads and motorways of the FS Group company. Traffic will be particularly intense at the weekend, so much so that Viabilità Italia has announced the red sticker for the afternoons of Saturday and Sunday.

«The summer travel season ends with this weekend» announced the CEO of Anas, Claudio Andrea Gemme. The first weekend of September will in fact see a real counter-exodus take place. Millions of vehicles will take to the roads to return from holiday resorts to large urban centers across the country.

Even if traffic will intensify along the entire peninsula, the flows will mainly concern the main connecting routes between tourist resorts and large urban centres, from the Mediterranean Motorway (the A2, which crosses Campania, Basilicata and Calabria) to the state roads 106 Jonica and 18 Tirrena Inferiore, two of the main coastal arteries of Calabria. Exceptional flows are also expected in Sicily, on the A19 Palermo-Catania and A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo motorways, and in Sardinia, along the 131 Carlo Felice state road.

But also in Central and Northern Italy, traffic will increase significantly, and especially on the state road 148 Pontina in Lazio, which together with the SS7 Appia guarantees connections between Rome and the tourist resorts of lower Lazio. The E45 route, which connects the North East with Central Italy, and the routes SS1 Aurelia (Lazio, Tuscany and Liguria), SS16 Adriatica (Puglia, Molise, Abruzzo, Emilia-Romagna and Veneto) will then be affected by the counter-exodus.

In the North, the junctions where the greatest critical issues are expected are the RA13 and RA14 motorway junctions in Friuli-Venezia Giulia from the border crossings, the SS36 of Lake Como and Spluga in Lombardy, the SS45 of Val Trebbia in Liguria, the SS26 of Valle D'Aosta and the SS309 Romea between Emilia-Romagna and Veneto and the SS 51 of Alemagna in Veneto.
