2-year-old child dies and mother is injured in bus accident on BR-122, in Bahia

The child Helena Lima de Moraes, aged 2, who died, and her mother, who was injured in the accident with a bus on BR-122, near Iraquara (BA), are from Palmas. With fractures in her legs, the mother remains at the Seabra Regional Hospital and awaits transfer to Tocantins.

According to a note from the Public Security Secretariat of Bahia (SSP-BA), the accident happened on the night of the 25th, when a bus from the company Real Maia, which was heading from Fortaleza to Palmas, left the road. According to the company, 24 people were in the vehicle, 22 passengers and two drivers.

According to the family, mother and daughter were returning to Palmas after a trip to Helena's grandmother's house, in Pernambuco. According to the child's aunt, Caiane Couto Araújo, her sister-in-law suffered a fracture in her femur and another in one of her feet. She was taken to the Seabra Regional Hospital, in Bahia.

The family tries to transfer her to the Palmas General Hospital (HGP), where she must undergo the necessary procedure.

"She fractured the foot of one of her legs and broke the femur of the other. She is admitted to Seabra Hospital. My husband, who is her brother and Helena's father, went to Bahia because the hospital where she is does not perform the surgery she needs on her femur. They are trying to transfer her to Palmas so that she can undergo the procedure", she said.

In a statement, Real Maia and the responsible insurance company informed that they are providing all necessary assistance to the passenger and her family. According to the company, the transfer depends on the assessment of the medical team and health regulations, which define the appropriate time for removal, in addition to the destination and type of transport indicated.

According to the company, the patient remains hospitalized and, according to medical advice, a surgical procedure is recommended before transfer. Real Maia stated that it will continue to monitor the case, together with the insurance company, respecting all medical determinations and health regulations, with a commitment to offering the necessary support to the patient and her family.

The report questioned Real Maia about the transportation and costs of the child's wake and is awaiting a position from the company.

The girl's death caused commotion among family and friends. According to Caiane, Helena was a child much loved and awaited by her mother.

"Very intelligent and smart. Unfortunately, this tragedy happened to her as a little girl, with her whole life ahead of her. At this moment, the family is helpless in the face of this situation."

The aunt also recalled that her sister-in-law faced difficulties in realizing her dream of becoming a mother.

"Helena was an only child. Her dream was to be a mother. Helena was very loved by the whole family, because her mother faced many difficulties in getting pregnant", she said.

The circumstances of the accident will be investigated by the Bahia Civil Police, which is awaiting the results of expert reports to clarify what caused the bus to leave the road.
