CRO-PB suspends dental surgery course with Italian professionals not qualified in Brazil

The procedures were part of the practical stage of a course that had Brazilian patients as volunteers. According to CRO-PB, among them were low-income people, who would undergo surgeries during the training.

The Council states that the professionals were foreigners, of Italian nationality, and were not regularly registered in Brazil to work as dental surgeons. The situation, according to the agency, could constitute illegal exercise of the profession.

The inspection began after a complaint received by CRO-PB. On Thursday (24), a Council team was at a clinic where the course would be held and informed that the activity could not take place. The course was suspended at that time.

Even after the determination, according to the Council, those responsible did the theoretical part in a hotel and looked for another space to carry out the surgical procedures. The chosen location was a postgraduate school, which, according to CRO-PB, would not have been informed about who would teach the course or how the procedures would be carried out.

With the identification of the new address, the Council called the Civil Police to monitor the inspection and verify the possible practice of illegal practice of Dentistry.

During the action, according to CRO-PB, materials used in implants that would not have legal use in the country were found. The inspection also highlighted problems in dental documentation related to surgical procedures and patient examinations.

According to the CRO-PB, professionals trained abroad need to comply with the requirements set out in Brazilian legislation to practice the profession. The same goes for dental surgeons from other states who intend to work in Paraíba without the necessary registration.

The president of CRO-PB, Leonardo Marconi, stated that the body has expanded its monitoring of situations involving professionals without legal qualifications to work in the state.

The incident was monitored by the Paraíba Civil Police. The circumstances of the procedures and the possible liability of those involved will be investigated by the competent authorities.
