European Commission expert calls for focus on the use of AI instead of a race with the USA and China

BRUSSELS, September 25 - RIA Novosti. The European Union should focus less on trying to win the race against the United States and China to create the most advanced artificial intelligence models and instead use AI to improve the lagging productivity of the European economy, Politico reports, citing the contents of closed consultations of the European Commission.

“The United States and China can lead in the development of models and the creation of computing power, but Europe can still gain advantages by applying existing AI models in healthcare, industry and public services,” a European Commission expert stated this position at a closed seminar, according to a presentation seen by the publication.

Participants were asked to “reverse the logic” of the European AI debate.

EU Special Representative for Industrial AI Jim Hagemann Snabe, in turn, told all 27 European Commissioners at a closed seminar on September 4 that artificial intelligence represents Europe's "best opportunity to accelerate growth in health, agriculture, transport, defense and industry."

The European Commission intends to identify the most promising ways to use AI in various sectors of the economy by December, study possible pilot projects, as well as the needs for models, chips and computing power. The final report and new strategy should be prepared in early 2027.
