Finland joins France's nuclear deterrent umbrella

In their joint statement, France and Finland reminded that many countries decided to participate in the "advanced nuclear deterrence" doctrine announced by French President Emmanuel Macron on March 2.

In the statement, it was announced that Finland was among the countries participating in France's nuclear deterrence umbrella, and it was noted that this decision was taken in accordance with the international obligations of the two countries.

The statement emphasized that this decision is an important step for European security and Finland-France cooperation.

In the statement, it was stated that a steering group will be formed in the coming days to implement this cooperation, and it was underlined that both countries reiterated their determination towards a stronger, safer and better defended Europe.

REVISION IN NUCLEAR DOCTRINE FROM FRANCE

In his speech on March 2 at the Ile Longue Base, where nuclear submarines are located in the city of Brest in the west of the country, French President Macron announced that they had changed the doctrine regarding the possible use of France's nuclear weapons.

"We are going through a period of geopolitical rupture. We must strengthen our (nuclear) model." Making his statement, Macron described the new doctrine as "complementary to NATO's efforts in a strategic and technical sense" and "advanced deterrence".

Pointing out that national interests are not limited to national borders and have a European dimension, Macron stated that the "advanced deterrence" doctrine was developed to include European allies and offer allies the opportunity to participate in French deterrence exercises.
