Ihor M. in pre-trial detention after a knife attack in Jarosław

The court accepted the request of the District Prosecutor's Office in Jarosław. Ihor M. was placed under temporary arrest until December 23, 2026.

The court's ruling indicates that this measure in the form of temporary arrest should be used in hospital conditions, said prosecutor Bożena Harasz-Wołoszyn from the District Prosecutor's Office in Przemyśl.

The 31-year-old was not brought to the court hearing due to his health condition. He is to be sent to a medical facility with a reinforced security ward. The prosecutor's office does not reveal where he will be staying.

Five people attacked with a knife

The tragedy occurred on Thursday morning on the premises of the Benedictine nuns' monastery in Jarosław. According to investigators, Ihor M. entered the monastery kitchen, took a knife and attacked five people - four men and a woman.

The priest who tried to stop the attacker died. Two people remain in a serious condition in a hospital in Jarosław. Their condition has not worsened since Friday. The injured woman is being treated at the hospital in Przeworsk, and one of the attacked people left the hospital in Przemyśl on Thursday evening.

He entered Poland from Germany

Investigative findings show that Ihor M. entered Poland from Germany on the night of September 23 through the border crossing in Świecko. He then intended to cross the border into Ukraine in Korczowa.

However, his car did not have compulsory third party liability insurance. The man left his car in Korczowa and reached Jarosław by private car, which gave him a lift from random people. The vehicle was seized for the purposes of the investigation.

The prosecutor's office has already interviewed border guard officers, direct witnesses of the attack and the injured whose health condition allowed it. Investigators are still collecting evidence. The decision on whether the District Prosecutor's Office in Przemyśl will take over the proceedings will most likely be made on Monday.

Allegations and psychiatrists' opinion

The prosecutor's office charged the 31-year-old with murder, attempted murder and causing serious bodily injury. However, she could not announce charges against him or question him.

Psychiatric experts diagnosed the suspect with "acute polymorphic psychotic disorders." As prosecutor Harasz-Wołoszyn emphasized, the current opinion does not yet determine whether the man was sane at the time of the attack. The answer to this question is to be provided by another opinion, issued after collecting evidence and carrying out activities involving the suspect.

The motive for the attack remains unknown.
