IOM: More than 85 thousand people were displaced due to conflicts in Yemen

IOM made a written statement regarding the increasing conflicts between the army and the Houthis in Yemen.

In the statement, it was stated that the number of displaced people in Yemen, where conflicts have increased in recent days, exceeded 85 thousand, and 2 thousand people fled to Djibouti.

"Families are being forcibly removed from their homes, and some are leaving the country altogether," the statement said, adding that if the conflicts intensify, more people are expected to be displaced or flee.

The statement reminded that Yemeni families fled many times during the 12-year conflict, with almost nothing left.

In the statement, it was emphasized that access to the region has become increasingly difficult due to the ongoing conflicts, and that communication in the regions affected by the conflicts has been interrupted, making it difficult to reach people and evaluate their needs.

IOM Director General Amy Pope, whose comments were included in the statement, said, "Behind every figure is a family that has lost everything. Many have been displaced many times. People are crossing the sea with nothing because they have no other options."

Emphasizing that Yemen is a country torn by poverty and conflict and that it cannot handle this crisis alone, Pope called on donors to increase support for those who come to Djibouti and the people in Obock who welcome them.

The conflicts that have escalated again in Yemen since July have noticeably changed the control map in the field.

After gaining control over the entire Hudaydah province, the Houthis advanced towards the west of Taiz and captured cities on the Red Sea coast such as Muha and the lines providing access to Babulmandeb.

The Houthis' capture of the city of Muha in Taiz on the Red Sea coast, as well as Hanish Archipelago, Meyyun Island and Zubab around the Babulmandeb Strait, caused a significant change in the conflict area.
