Fish season started with abundance in Istanbul: Bonito and anchovy filled the stalls

Yaşar Gün, President of Istanbul Chamber of Fish Sellers and Tradesmen, said that after the start of the season, fishermen went to sea and the boats returned full.

Gün stated that fishing started well this season and that many fish species, especially bonito, anchovy and horse mackerel, were abundant.

Acorn is between 100-150 TL

Regarding the prices on the stalls, Yaşar Gün said, "The price of acorn varies between 100 and 150 lira depending on its size. Anchovy is plentiful this year, prices are 100 lira, 80 lira. Horse mackerel is also very nice." he said.

Emphasizing that this season is very different compared to last year, Gün said, "The boats are coming full. I hope it will continue like this until the fishing season is over. Our tradesmen are satisfied with the situation. This year, citizens will have their fill of fish in Marmara." he said.

HIGHEST LEVELS IN FISH ABUNDANCE IN THE LAST 10 YEARS

Gün continued by stating that he expects the fish to grow even more with the rain and the cooling of the weather:

"In such weather, the fish grows even more. Hopefully, the fish will weigh more than a kilo. In this case, the fish becomes even cheaper. When the weather gets colder and there is rain, the fish grows better. The abundance of fish is at the highest level in the last 10 years. This year, there are all kinds of fish. But the abundance of bonito, anchovies, horse mackerel, whiting and mullet is quite high right now. Citizens' interest in fish is very good. They are eating a lot of fish right now, the stalls are full, the sales are good. In other words, the buyers and the sellers are both good." And the one who eats it is satisfied."

"Hopefully, OUR PEOPLE WILL EAT A LOT OF FISH THIS YEAR"

Kumkapı Fishermen's Bazaar Association President Erkan Sarıyaprak also said that the fish season started very well this year.

Sarıyaprak said, "Fish is very abundant. This year, there are the most bonito in the last 10 years. Hopefully, it will be even more abundant. Anchovy, horse mackerel and mullet are very abundant this year. Hopefully, our people will eat a lot of fish this year. Bonito is the most in demand. After bonito, anchovy, horse mackerel and mullet come." he said.

Stating that rain and cold weather have an impact on the quantity and taste of fish, Sarıyaprak said:

"If it rains, the bonito will grow a little larger and be more abundant, and the fish will be a little more delicious in cold water. We are expecting more fish. This year, we have the most abundant fish in recent years. There are plenty of horse mackerel, plenty of anchovies and bonito. Our citizens should eat fish according to the season. This year, for example, they should eat bonito in September, bluefish in October, and yellowfin in November. If citizens eat fish according to the season, they cannot get enough of it."
