Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney wins the silver medal at the world championships in Montreal

Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney won the silver medal in the cycling world championships in Montreal in the mass start race. At the finish, the Pole was overtaken by the Dutch Demi Vollering. Third place went to the Italian Elisa Longo Borghini.

Niewiadoma-Phinney's second medal in her career

This is Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney's second world championship medal. Earlier, in 2021, the Pole won bronze in Belgium.

A dramatic race and a big crash

The race in Montreal was held on a demanding 180-kilometer route. About 95 kilometers before the finish line, there was a major crash that excluded several competitors from the competition, including one of the favorites, Spanish Paula Blasi, and Canadian Magdeleine Vallieres, defending the champion. Marta Jaskulska also suffered.

The competitors covered the 13-kilometer circuit in Montreal eight times, and the pace of the race was constantly increasing. With 38 kilometers left to the finish line, Demi Vollering attacked, trying to repeat her feat from last year's European Championships.

Fight until the last meters

The Dutchwoman maintained the advantage for a long time, but 15 kilometers before the finish she was overtaken by Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney, Elisa Longo Borghini and the French Juliette Berthet. On the last lap, Longo Borghini had a ten-second advantage, but was overtaken by Vollering and Niewiadoma.

In the final stretch, the Pole was ready to finish, but in the last meters she suffered from a cramp. Ultimately, she had to settle for the silver medal, losing only a few meters to the winner.

Dominika Włodarczyk finished the race in high, eighth place. The remaining Polish representatives did not finish the competition.

The world championships will end on Sunday with an elite men's mass start race.
