Kimi Antonelli wins the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, Verstappen second and Norris third

Kimi Antonelli never stops and also wins the first historic edition of the Spanish Grand Prix on the Madrid circuit: the Italian Mercedes driver preceded Max Verstappen on Red Bull and Lando Norris on McLaren at the finish line. Charles Leclerc's Ferrari was fourth, George Russell's other Mercedes was fifth. The other Maranello driver, Lewis Hamilton, retired after a few laps due to a brake problem (HIGHLIGHTS).

The race: Norris stopped by the virtual safety car

The Mercedes driver from Bologna expertly manages a very tight race and fends off Verstappen's final assault attempt, who takes an excellent second place. The world champion's McLaren completes the podium, failing to capitalize on its pole position also due to the timing of the virtual safety. Ferrari still remains outside the top 3, with Leclerc finishing fourth after waiting in vain for a red flag. Hamilton, however, exits the scene on lap seven due to a brake problem.

Russell is only fifth: he is now -81 behind the World Championship leader

Fifth position for the other Mercedes of British George Russell, who now slips to -81 in the standings behind teammate Antonelli. Excellent performance by the Argentinian Franco Colapinto, who brings Alpine to seventh place behind Liam Lawson's Red Bull. Also in the top 10 were Oscar Piastri (McLaren), Arvid Lindblad (Racing Bulls) and Nico Hulkenberg (Audi). Formula 1 will return to the track on the weekend of September 26th in Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
