Criminal faction leader is sentenced to more than 53 years in prison in Parnaíba

The conviction was obtained in a trial held on Thursday (24), in the District of Parnaíba, and published by the Public Ministry of the State of Piauí (MPPI) later. The agency reported that it obtained the conviction for the crimes of qualified murder, attempted qualified murder and integration into a criminal organization.

The Jury Court session lasted more than ten hours. The MPPI was represented by prosecutor João Malato Neto, who supported the defendant's conviction for the crimes of qualified homicide for a base motive, using means that resulted in common danger, through an appeal that made it impossible to defend the victim and to ensure impunity or advantage of another crime; attempted qualified homicide due to the same circumstances; and integration into a criminal organization.

According to the case records, in the early hours of February 27, 2022, in the Ilha Grande de Santa Isabel neighborhood, in Parnaíba, the accused participated in the murder of Maria de Jesus dos Santos da Silva and the attempted murder against her husband, Antônio de Jesus de Sousa Barquil.

According to the case, the defendant was one of the leaders of a criminal faction and, motivated by revenge, decided to execute the victims, who belonged to a rival faction. The crime would have been motivated by disputes over control of the region for drug trafficking.

The Public Prosecutor's thesis was fully accepted by the Sentencing Council. After setting the sentence at 53 years, five months and three days in prison, the defendant was immediately sent to the local penitentiary to begin serving his sentence.
