NYT gaming executive shot and killed by father-in-law and mother-in-law

(San Francisco = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kwon Young-jeon = An executive leading the gaming division at the American daily New York Times (NYT) was shot dead by his father-in-law and mother-in-law in a residential park.

According to the NYT and the local media San Francisco Chronicle on the 28th (local time), Jonathan Mackenzie (40), head of technology for the game division of NYT, was found dead from a gunshot wound in a park parking lot in Dublin City, about 50 km east of San Francisco, California, on the 26th.

A resident who was near the scene at the time of the incident testified that he heard 5 to 6 gunshots and then saw Mackenzie fall, and immediately after that, he saw a man and a woman leaving the scene with calm steps.

Based on reports from witnesses, police arrested Mackenzie's father-in-law, Seo Woo-yung Jang (76), and his mother-in-law, Sri Chen (76), on charges including murder at an intersection near the park just minutes after the incident.

They were imprisoned at the nearby Santa Rita Detention Center and are scheduled to appear in court on the 30th.

McKinsey is an engineer who received a master's degree in computer engineering from the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), and joined NYT in 2023 after working at Oracle and Splunk.

Investigating authorities did not reveal the specific motive for the crime, but it was revealed that McKinsey had been engaged in a divorce lawsuit and legal battle regarding domestic violence with his wife.

Last year, he was indicted on charges of child abuse after his wife reported him, and he also applied for a restraining order against his wife on the grounds of domestic violence.

Mackenzie had recently moved out of the home she shared with her family and was just days away from the first court hearing in her divorce case.
